Ex-Razorback Considers Joining Idaho

Jesse Pate, leading scorer on the University of Arkansas men’s basketball team until he was ruled ineligible after 21 games, is considering transferring to Idaho.

Pate, a 6-foot-4 guard, played for new Idaho coach Kermit Davis as a freshman at Chipola (Fla.) Junior College. Davis left to become an assistant coach at Utah State and Pate averaged 33.5 points per game as a sophomore at Chipola, where he was named junior college player of the year by one magazine.

Pate averaged 13.4 points at Arkansas this season, but missed the final month after he was ruled ineligible by the NCAA. Pate did not receive a two-year degree from Chipola, but took summer school and correspondence courses to become eligible to enroll at Arkansas. However, an NCAA investigation in February into Pate’s transcripts determined he had joined the team eight days before he was eligible to play.

Arkansas officials have stressed that the school’s certification staff was at fault, and not Pate.

Pate has reportedly narrowed his choices to Idaho, Memphis State and Fresno State.

He was scheduled to visit Moscow for three days starting Friday, but that apparently is being rescheduled to a later date to allow Pate to concentrate on academics.

Pate has one year of eligibility.

Pate started 14 of his 21 games at Arkansas. He shot 40.6 percent from the field, 30.3 percent on 3-pointers and 71.6 from the foul line. Pate, who once scored 56 points in a JC game, scored a season high 29 in an 81-73 loss to Arizona last November.

Arkansas finished 20-13 and advanced to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA tournament.
