Compiled From Wire Services

A prominent U.S. civil rights lawyer and a law professor were killed in a traffic accident near Cape Town, medical officials said Wednesday.

W. Haywood Burns, 55, former dean of the law school at the City University of New York, and Margaret Shanara Gilbert, an associate professor at the law school, were killed Tuesday night when the car they were riding in collided with a truck.

Felicia Roberts, a South African, also died in the crash; she was the only other passenger in the car.

Burns and Gilbert were in South Africa attending the International Association of Democratic Lawyers Congress in Cape Town.
