Frontier, Gsl Send Their Best To All-Star Game
All three Frontier League most valuable players and one from the Greater Spokane League were among eight area players selected for the East in the AAA/AA East-West all-star football game.
The game, which was played in Spokane last summer, is set for June 28 in Everett.
The FL representatives are Riverside quarterback Joel Schurtz, the league’s top offensive player, Cheney’s Bart Olson, the top linemen, and East Valley linebacker Jesse Ewell, the top defender.
Heading the list of GSL players is offensive MVP is Giorgio Usai, a running back from Central Valley.
The other four GSL selections were all first-team players, Mead receiver Adam Morris, CV quarterback R.J. Del Mese, Rogers lineman Bryan Hemphill and University tight end Mike Roberg.
An injury is likely to knock Del Mese out of the game. Another GSL quarterback, Paul Mencke of Lewis and Clark, passed on the contest.
The East team will be coached by Craig Beverlin of Kamiakin, which lost the State AAA championship game to Curtis. Allen Martin of Riverside will coach the defensive linemen.
Del Mese, a senior, tore an anterior cruciate ligament in a non-league baseball game against Sandpoint a few weeks ago when he rounded first base after hitting a ground ball.
He is scheduled for arthroscopy surgery today to determine the extent of the damage.
CV baseball coach Ed Garcia said Del Mese’s parents were told by doctors that they were surprised the injury hadn’t occurred earlier. Del Mese first hurt the leg in seventh grade and played sports at times with a brace.
“It’s really sad, I feel so bad for him,” Garcia said. “He’s a wonderful young man who was going to have a good season.”
Future plans
Mead’s Matt Armitage and Corey Oden have signed letters of intent to play baseball at Olympic College (Bremerton, Wash.) for 1997. Olympic is a member of the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges and plays in the Northern Division.
The Rangers also signed Jay Robinson out of Kamiakin.
Angela Harrison, the GSL’s all-league soccer goalkeeper, is going to Portland.
Portland has become a second home to standout GSL female athletes. The Pilots are taking all-league picks Harrison, Jennifer Swinton (Ferris basketball) and Molly Jones (Ferris volleyball). Other all-league performers already there are Kristin Hepton (CV basketball) and Kim Stiles (Mead soccer).
Quincy Wilder, a 6-foot-2 guard who is considered the state’s top prep basketball prospect, says he intends to sign a letter of intent with the University of Washington.
Wilder was the most valuable player in the Class AAA state tournament in leading Decatur High to a second-place finish. He averaged 23.5 points in the state tournament. Wilder led AAA state players in regular-season scoring with a 26.8 average.
