Painting Helps Artist Overcome Limitations

Joe Ehrbar Staff Writer

Two years after Ernie Pepion returned from the Vietnam War, he was involved in a car accident that left him quadriplegic.

Rather than lament about his handicap, Pepion, a Blackfeet Indian from Browning, Mont., enrolled in the art program at Montana State University. He subsequently earned a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in fine art.

Now, Pepion is a reputable and established Montana artist. He’ll give an illustrated lecture of his work at Cheney Cowles Museum, 2316 W. First, on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

“Painting allows me to be a person beyond the limitation of racial prejudice and disability,” Pepion said in a press release. “Art enables me to address feelings that are difficult for me to write or even talk about.”

His lecture is part of the museum’s “Wednesday Night Program Series.” It’s free, although donations are welcome. Call 456-3931 for additional information.

Rembrandt anyone?

On Saturday, April 27, Cheney Cowles Museum will hold an exhibition and sale of original etchings, wood cuts, drawing and lithographs from the Davidson Galleries in Seattle.

Works from Rembrandt, Roualt, Hogarth and Hiroshige are among the many items up for sale.

The show covers more than 500 years of print-making. Several pieces are priced under $100.

Sam Davidson, owner of the Davidson Galleries, will be on hand to answer questions as well as appraise paintings and other works on paper brought to the exhibition. Each appraisal is $5.

Before the sale begins at 9:30 a.m., Davidson will present a slide show, “African American Images and Print Artists,” in the museum’s auditorium.

The sale lasts from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, call 456-3931.
