Wilson Fuels M’S 14-3 Rout Another Homer From Catcher Propels Seattle Over Toronto

Associated Press

The Seattle Mariners want everyone to know they’re more than a one-man team.

Ken Griffey Jr. was the only Seattle starter who didn’t reach base Saturday as the Mariners trounced the Toronto Blue Jays 14-3.

Dan Wilson hit a three-run homer that capped a six-run first inning and Alex Rodriguez doubled twice and drove in a career-high four runs. Jay Buhner drove in three runs and Edgar Martinez added a two-run double for Seattle.

“It’s nice to be able to score as many as we did today with him going 0-for-4,” Wilson said. “This was a team win. Griffey’s always going to win a lot of ballgames for us, with his bat and glove. But we know we can win without him, too.”

Wilson, who hit three home runs in Detroit on Thursday, homered into the second deck in left field. Martinez hit a two-run double and Jay Buhner had an RBI single before Wilson hit his fourth homer of the year.

“I’m really not doing anything differently,” Wilson said. “I guess the only difference might be that I’m seeing more fastballs in certain situations.”

Chris Bosio (1-0), activated from the disabled list before the game, won for the first time since Sept. 12. Coming off his seventh knee surgery, he gave up three runs on four hits in 5-1/3 innings, with three strikeouts and two walks.

“That was a good return for Bosio. He was sharp,” Mariners manager Lou Piniella said. “He started to get a little tired in the sixth, but that’s all he was going to go anyway.”

Jeff Ware (0-1) struggled in his first major league start. He was charged with eight runs on five hits and three walks, and left before retiring a batter in the second.

“You can’t walk a lot of guys and expect to win,” Blue Jays manager Cito Gaston said. “Jeff put the first two men on and that really hurt him, both on the scoreboard and the way he was forced to pitch after that.”

Carlos Delgado hit his third homer of the season and Tilson Brito hit his first big league homer for the Blue Jays.

Ware walked Joey Cora and Rich Amaral to start the game and Martinez doubled over Joe Carter’s head in left field. After Griffey flied out, Buhner singled for a 3-0 lead and Wilson later homered.

Buhner hit a two-run single off Tony Castillo in the second. Rodriguez hit an RBI double in the sixth and a three-run double in the seventh.
