Graham Vink Travel Editor

From THINGS TO DO column, Sunday, April 28, 1996: Ooops: Two erroneous phone numbers crept into this column last Sunday. The right stuff: For a free Oregon travel guide, call (800) 547-7842. For information about Mount Robson Adventure Holidays in British Columbia for travelers over 50, call (604) 566-4386.

A 1920s-era Pullman dining car has been restored by the National Railway Historical Society and will debut May 26 on a run in southwest British Columbia.

It will make its second debut May 26 as part of the public charter Classic Coast Mountaineer train. Diners aboard the Classic Coast Mountaineer train will eat in luxury as a 1912 steam locomotive pulls them 190 miles from Vancouver to Whistler Resort and Pemberton.

For tickets, call the Discover B.C. reservation line at (800) 663-6000.

Sun Valley gold: Sun Valley, Idaho, might be best known for skiing, but its outdoor skating rink will host Brian Boitano, Oksana Baiul, Nancy Kerrigan and other world-class skaters this summer.

Performances are held on Saturdays beginning June 15, with two performances over the 4th of July holiday. Visitors can also take the opportunity to spin and glide over the same ice as the stars.

The area has a wide variety of other activities, including fishing, hiking, kayaking, and mountain biking. For more information, call (800) 786-8259.

Thar she blows: Ocean whale-watching cruises out of Westport, Wash., are being offered through May, giving visitors the opportunity to spot some of the 20,000 gray whales that travel from breeding grounds in Mexico to summer feeding grounds off Alaska.

The three-hour cruises, narrated by a professional naturalist, are held aboard a 149-passenger boat and include a slide show. For more information, call Mosquito Fleet at (800) 325-ORCA or (206) 252-6800.

Fun after 50: The “Fifty Plus Adventure” from Mount Robson Adventure Holidays is intended for people over age 50 who enjoy an active vacation. Mount Robson Provincial Park in British Columbia is the setting for the trip, which includes a canoe trip, rafting, and short hikes. The trip is scheduled for June 16 to 21. Groups of four or more can schedule additional dates.

All meals and accommodations are included in the $516 (Canadian) price, based on double occupancy. For information, call (604) 566-4351.

Oregon lodging: The free 1996 edition of “Where to Stay in Oregon” is now available. The guide lists various types of accommodations, including hotels, resorts, RV parks, campgrounds, and bed and breakfasts. Listings include rates and toll-free telephone numbers.

To receive a copy, call (503) 547-7842.
