Clemens Serves Up Another Boston Loss

The Kansas City Royals extended Roger Clemens’ worst start, keeping the Red Sox ace winless Friday night with a 4-3 victory at Boston.

Clemens (0-4) struck out 11 in seven innings and allowed only five hits. The three-time Cy Young winner, with a 4.17 ERA, had never before lost three in a row at the start of a season.

Michael Tucker hit a solo home run and Tim Belcher (2-1) pitched 7-plus innings for the Royals.

Mo Vaughn’s streak of reaching base stopped at 10 in a row when he struck out in the first for Boston.

Detroit

Danny Bautista, John Flaherty and Chris Gomez each drove in three runs and Detroit beat Oakland to end an eight-game losing streak.

Indians 6, Blue Jays 3

Toronto

Eddie Murray hit a two-run single and Orel Hershiser scattered eight hits in seven innings as Cleveland beat Toronto for its 12th win in 14 games.

Yankees 5, Twins 4

New York

Bernie Williams hit a grand slam that capped a five-run sixth, leading New York over Minnesota.

Rangers 5, Orioles 4

Baltimore

Will Clark broke a tie with a two-run double in the seventh as Texas ended a four-game losing streak.

Mickey Tettleton broke out of a 3-for-25 skid with three hits, including a homer, to help Texas improve to 4-0 against Baltimore this season.

Chicago postponed its game against California because of inclement weather. The game will be made up June 24 in a doubleheader.

Clearing the bases

Frank Viola, who has made three major league appearances since May 1994, was brought up from the minors by Toronto. Viola, 36, had left elbow surgery May 17, 1994, to repair a partially torn ligament. … After giving up 35 runs in its last two games, Detroit attempted to bolster its beleaguered pitching staff by obtaining former All-Star reliever Gregg Olson from Cincinnati. The Tigers sent minor league infielder Yuri Sanchez to Cincinnati in exchange for Olson, who was in uniform for Friday night’s game against Oakland.

Yankees pitcher David Cone, scratched from his scheduled start today against Minnesota, underwent tests on his pitching hand at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center. … Jason Giambi’s sixth-inning single extended his hitting streak to 16 for Oakland.

A heckling fan who was poked and slapped by California designated hitter Chili Davis at County Stadium in Milwaukee last summer has filed a lawsuit against him. Andy Johannsen, 26, of Milwaukee, is seeking unspecified damages in excess of $5,000, plus legal costs in the civil suit filed in Milwaukee County Circuit Court this week.
