Quality ‘Cybill’ Deserves To Stay Put

John Martin New York Times Syndicate

Cybill Sheridan and her friend Maryann Thorpe are in their favorite restaurant discussing their bodies and the premium society places on having a tight body.

“I guess that I would have a shot at more roles if I got a little nip ‘n’ tuck,” observes Cybill.

“Oh, that’s not the only answer,” Maryann responds sincerely. “You still have time to sleep your way to the top. (Pause) But if I were you, I’d get right on it.”

Cybill Shepherd and Christine Baranski, stars of “Cybill” (CBS at 9:30), are in top form as the series returns to the time slot where it belongs. Moving the outrageous comedy to Sundays (opposite NBC’s “Mad About You”) was one of CBS’ worst decisions of the season.

Tonight, Cybill fights the onset of menopause with a visit to a Chinese herbalist with Maryann in tow. That’s good for a few laughs.

Also, Ira (Alan Rosenberg) suffers through a visit by his mother (guest-star Florence Stanley), who shows up with a new look. She’s traded in her pantsuits for trendy clothes.

She arrives in a pink Cadillac and gets caught smoking pot. Talk about your change in life!

“Cybill” is CBS’ funniest show. Now that it’s back from exile, let’s hope the network keeps it put.

Highlights

“Put to the Test,” ABC at 8: The second of these pseudoscientific “investigations” features stories on a psychic detective, a Russian doctor who “sees” X-ray visions and a hypnotist’s claim he can cure any phobia in minutes. Unavailable for review.

“All-New, All-Star TV Censored Mega Bloopers,” NBC at 8: Dick Clark is joined by Crystal Bernard (“Wings”) and Kevin Sorbo (“Hercules”), who share bloopers from their shows.

“The Nanny,” CBS at 8: Fran (Fran Drescher) has a new boyfriend, cantor Gary Isaacs (Philip Casnoff). But Maxwell (Charles Shaughnessy) and Burt Bacharach (playing himself) turn her beau into a Broadway star.

Not only does she not see much of him, but temple members blame her for losing their cantor.

“The Beast” (1996), NBC at 9: In the conclusion, the great squid hunt continues after it’s discovered that the creature killed at the end of Part 1 was but a wee tyke, an offspring of the monster terrorizing the waters off Graves Point, Wash.

Part 2 drags along with one predictable scene after another as ol’ stretch puts the squeeze on one victim after another. I’ve seen more suspense on “Gilligan’s Island.”

Though I knew Whip Dalton (William Petersen) would finally prevail, I was pulling for the squid, hoping it would devour all of Graves Point and not stop until it got to NBC headquarters in Burbank.

“Angel Flight Down” (1996), ABC at 9: If you’ve seen the promos, you can practically visualize the first half-hour: An emergency hospital flight to Denver goes down in the Rocky Mountains.

Patricia Kalember (“Sisters”) is the courageous flight nurse. What are the odds this movie has an unhappy ending? There are no surprises in this fact-based drama.
