Lecture Will Tell Of Walk Across U.S.

The story of two Spokane women who walked across America a century ago this month will be featured Wednesday night at Cheney Cowles Museum.

“Stepping Out: Helga and Clara Estby’s Walk Across America in 1886” will be presented by Linda Hunt, an associate professor of English at Whitworth College.

Hunt will recount the story of a mother and daughter who embarked on their adventure on a $10,000 wager - money they needed to save their Mica Peak farm.

Pat Stien, professor emeritus of theater at Whitworth, will impersonate Helga Estby.

The program begins at 7:30 p.m. and is free. The lecture is part of the 1995/96 Wednesday series underwritten by the Johnston-Hanson Foundation of Spokane.
