Ewu Loses Top Recruit In Basketball

Eastern Washington’s latest basketball recruiting efforts have suffered a major setback.

It was learned that Jeremy Killion, a highly touted prep prospect from San Diego, failed to meet the NCAA’s academic eligibility standards that would have allowed him to accept an athletic scholarship to a Division I school.

Killion, a 6-foot-1 guard, was the San Diego area’s player of the year after averaging 32 points a game as a senior at Rancho Bernardo High School last winter. He will have to enroll at a junior college or pay his own way to EWU and sit out his freshman season as a Prop 48 casualty.

Second-year Eagles coach Steve Aggers is still not sure what Killion will do.

“Losing Jeremy is very disheartening,” said Aggers, who still has eight new recruits. “We thought he was going to be an outstanding addition to the program and a talent capable of helping this team in his freshman year.”

According to Aggers, Killion did a decent job academically his last two years in high school, but fell too far behind during his freshman and sophomore years to meet the NCAA’s sliding eligibility scales that combine SAT or ACT scores with grades from high school core courses.

Darren Slackman of Spokane broke a tie with Chris Lohman of Seattle and took sole possession of the lead Friday in the third round of the Washington State Men’s Amateur.

A 72 gave Slackman a 216, even par for 54 holes on the 6,792-yard Indian Summer Golf and Country Club course in Lacey. He leads his University of Washington teammate, Lohman, by two strokes going into today’s final round.

Lohman had a one-shot lead going into the 5-par 17th hole. He made bogey there, where Slackman birdied and moved in front. Slackman padded his lead when Lohman also bogeyed the 18th.

Alex Kouzmanoff of Pullman shot 77 for a 225 total. Sean Clements of Spokane was at 227 after a 74 and Kyle Kelly shot a 77 for a 233 total.

Spokane’s Corey Prugh had a final, three-round total of 229 in the boys 15-18 division at the IZZO Colorado Junior Roundup.

The tourney is conducted by the American Junior Golf Association in Westminster, Colo.

The winner, David Kang of Torrance, Calif., was at 211.

In the girls competition, Spokane’s Jennifer Hatley and Hillary Prugh finished at 246. Pam Buff of Barrington, Ill., won at 228.
