Man Injured In Fight With Intruder

A 36-year-old man was awakened by an intruder early Sunday and beaten at his west Spokane Valley home.

Sheriff’s deputies arrested Frank E. Dunphy, 23, for the attack a few minutes later. Dunphy, who was found nearby, matched the description of the intruder given by the victim, deputies said.

The intruder reportedly rushed at a window and broke through the screen at the victim’s apartment in the 6800 block of East Second Avenue. He then punched the victim in the face three or four times, causing facial injuries and damage to his dentures, deputies said.

The victim also received scratches to his elbow and stomach, but was not seriously injured.

During the scuffle, the intruder tried to flee out the window, but was pinned against the wall by the victim, said Sheriff’s Lt. David Wiyrick. Eventually, the intruder managed to wiggle free and run away.

The victim told deputies a man with a goatee and wearing blue jeans and a brown shirt had attacked him.

Dunphy, who gave a west Spokane address, was booked into the Spokane County Jail for first-degree burglary.

Woman’s purse stolen

A woman walking to her car Sunday morning had her purse swiped in front of a Liberty Lake grocery store.

The woman told deputies that two men in a white hatchback car parked behind her car at the Albertson’s at 1304 N. Liberty Lake Road.

When she left the store, a black man in his 20s shoved her to the ground, deputies said. He then grabbed the woman’s purse and ran back to the car he had arrived in, deputies said.

A white man in his 20s was waiting in the car and drove him away, deputies said.

The assailant was described as about 5-foot-8 and 200 pounds. The driver was described as 5-foot-7 and 150 pounds with short, sandy blonde hair.

Shoplifting suspect arrested

A man seen leaving a department store with an armload of clothes fought with security officers last Wednesday before he was arrested, deputies said.

David K. McDaniel, 29, was arrested for second-degree theft, a felony, and booked into jail.

Deputies said McDaniel was stopped by security officers inside University City Shopping Center after he was seen leaving J.C. Penney with clothes he had not paid for.

While security officers returned McDaniel to the store, he reportedly threw the clothes on the floor and ran down the mall.

Security officers caught McDaniel and a struggle ensued before he was handcuffed, Wiyrick said.
