Troy Dumais, the 16-year-old diver being touted by many as the next Greg Louganis, beat defending champion Dean Panaro on the 1-meter springboard for his first national title in the National Diving Championships at Moultrie, Ga. Dumais beat Panaro by 15 points and is believed to be the youngest male diver to win a national crown. Louganis, who won a record 47 national titles, won his first at age 18 in 1978.

… Fairmont State (Fairmont, W.Va.) basketball player Gyprain Bailey, 21, died when a car in which he was a passenger hit a telephone pole, flipped and skidded across the road, authorities said… . A Lexington, Ky. judge gave former Kentucky basketball star Kenny Walker a seven-day jail sentence, but agreed to allow him to serve the time when he returns from playing professionally in Japan. Walker pleaded guilty this year to menacing his wife. He will begin serving the sentence April 4, 1997, after returning from a stint with the basketball team of Isuzu Motors Ltd., said his attorney, William Rambicure… . Beth Daniels, winner of 32 tournaments, will head the four-woman field for LPGA Skins Game at The Dominion Club on Oct. 6 at Richmond, Va.
