Broncos Beat Cowboys; Smith Hurt Early

From Wire Reports

John Elway and Bill Musgrave each threw touchdown passes Saturday night at Dallas and the Denver Broncos downed Dallas 20-3 in a preaseason game in which Cowboys running back Emmitt Smith threw a scare into the Super Bowl champions when he sprained his left knee.

Smith, seeing his first action of the preseason, injured his left knee when his teammate, 340-pound tackle Erik Williams, fell on it in the second quarter. Smith stayed down for almost 5 minutes before he walked unassisted to the sidelines.

Bills 24, Panthers 0

Jim Kelly, on the field for only 10 plays, completed 4 of 5 passes for 45 yards and a first-quarter touchdown that sent Buffalo past Carolina at Charlotte, N.C.

The 10-year NFL veteran spent the rest of the exhibition game watching Alex Van Pelt and Todd Collins state their cases to become Kelly’s top backup.

Rams 34, Chiefs 30

Rookie Eddie Kennison caught three touchdown passes as visiting St. Louis, exploiting uncharacteristic mistakes by Kansas City’s defense, rallied for an win.

The Chiefs defense, which ranked No. 2 in the NFL last year and hadn’t yielded a touchdown in nine exhibition quarters, self-destructed with penalties and missed tackles in every TD drive by the Rams.

Packers 17, Ravens 15

Richie Cunningham kicked a 42-yard field goal with 3 seconds left to give unbeaten Green Bay a victory, handing the host Ravens their first loss in franchise history.

Cunningham is the underdog in his battle with Chris Jacke as the staring placekicker.

Saints 31, Bears 21

Jim Everett, working more than a quarter for the first time in four exhibition games, passed for 218 yards and three touchdowns as New Orleans beat Chicago at the Louisiana Superdome.

Jets 13, Giants 6

Carl Greenwood capped a sloppy night with a 40-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown lifting the New York Jets past the New York Giants at East Rutherford, N.J.

Neither team is expected to do much this season, and the offenses showed why - particularly when the backups took the field in the second half.

Steelers 13, Buccaneers 3

Pittsburgh’s defense and Jerome Bettis’ running were enough to beat Tampa Bay at Pittsburgh.

It was an unsuccessful return for new Bucs coach Tony Dungy, a former Steelers player and the youngest defensive coordinator in franchise history under coach Chuck Noll.

Chargers 32, Cardinals 10

Stan Humphries guided San Diego to two touchdowns and a field goal on its first three possessions and the Chargers went on to paste bumbling Arizona.

Ross replaced Humphries with 10:13 left in the second quarter, and with Sean Salisbury running the show, the Chargers made it 20-0 on their next series.
