The great thing about retro styles is you don’t have to spend a fortune to stay in fashion.

With all-things-‘70s the way to go this year, it’s as easy to find the latest styles at a thrift store as it is at any department store.

Proof of this was abundant at the second annual Cancer Patient Care Thrift Store fashion event earlier this month. Though the temperature was a record-breaking high, the event drew in a crowd close to 100 people.

It took days of preparation and planning - not to mention digging through thrift-store racks - to put together this sophisticated fashion show. Joey Frost, marketing manager for Cancer Patient Care, put in a lot of hard work and energy in selecting the unique clothing for the teen models to wear.

A rehearsal guaranteed the models all coordinated their struts on the Crescent Court-donated runway. DJ Casey Christopher from 93 Zoo FM hosted the show.

The audience reactions were as varied as the outfits modeled. From Alashia Freimuth’s Levi sweatshirt and jeans to the polyester plaid “Brady Bunch” pantsuit that I modeled, there were lots of oohs and eeks!

The audience really got into the “hot” and “not” contest. Seven models took turns pacing the runway while Christopher detailed each outfit. The goal of each model was to convince the audience into voting for them. In the end, the “hot” outfit when to Sarah Seymour, who wore a red and black knit sweater dress. The “not” outfit went to Bree Frost in the brown polyester bell-bottoms and vest.

I guess teens will only go so far in their thirst for retro styles!

Still, nearly every outfit sold. After the show, each of the outfits were put back on the racks and made available for purchase. The crowd went wild. It’s amazing how many stylish things you can find in a thrift store. Not only were those people being “smart shoppers,” they were saving some big bucks! Just about any thrift store in town will have a version of what the Paris runways showed for this year: fitted shirts, lace, polyester prints, pants (no pleats in front, flared and low on the hips), anything denim, velour, vinyl trench coats, snug sweaters, striped cardigans, knits, plaid, high boots…

In short, anything ‘70s.
