Angels Rookie Tops Slumping Yankees

Associated Press

American League

Chili Davis hit a pair of two-run homers and Jason Dickson won despite giving up a home run on his first major league pitch as the California Angels beat the slumping New York Yankees 7-1 Wednesday at Yankee Stadium.

Davis connected in the first off Jimmy Key (9-10) and added his 25th of the season in a five-run ninth, an opposite-field shot to left off Jeff Nelson.

Derek Jeter sent Dickson’s first pitch into the left-field seats but that was the only run he allowed. The Yankees, who have lost eight of 12, stranded 11 runners and hit into three double plays, despite outhitting California 13-9.

Tigers 7, White Sox 4

Detroit

Brad Ausmus’ three-run homer capped a four-run eighth inning as the Tigers beat Chicago for just the second time in 10 games this season.

Brewers 10, Twins 7

Minneapolis

John Jaha’s three-run homer keyed a five-run eighth-inning rally for Milwaukee in a win over Minnesota.

Twins starter Brad Radke had retired 11 consecutive batters but left with a 5-2 lead in the eighth.

Rangers 10, Tribe 8 (10)

Cleveland

Rusty Greer hit a two-run homer in the 10th inning to give Texas a win over Cleveland.

Greer, 3 for 6 in the game and 8 for 14 in the series, drove a 1-1 pitch to right field off Julian Tavarez (4-7).

Blue Jays 6, Royals 2

Kansas City, Mo.

Juan Guzman pitched a six-hitter and won for the first time in more than a month as Toronto beat the Royals for its first three-game sweep in Kansas City in a decade.

Red Sox 6, Athletics 4

Boston

Mike Stanley hit a two-run single to break an eighth-inning tie and Mo Vaughn went 3 for 3 with three runs scored, including the game-winner, in Boston’s victory over Oakland.

Cone mows them down

David Cone struck out seven of 16 batters and didn’t walk anyone in a Double A game Wednesday night in the first start of his speedy comeback after surgery in May to remove an aneurysm in his right shoulder.

Throwing as fast as 90 mph, Cone allowed just four hits.
