Water, Water Everywhere And Some Nice Plants, Too

Water and water plants will be the focus of a tour in the Palouse, Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. A pond tour, sponsored by Sojourners’ Alliance, will visit six water gardens in and near Moscow, Idaho. Gardens include a Japanese tea garden, informal and formal backyard ponds, a pond stocked with fish, a reflection pool, a wildlife pond and an exhibit of preformed ponds. The tour includes refreshments and access to master gardeners who can offer advice on water gardens. The tour costs $10, $15 for couples, $20 for families; tickets and maps are available at the Moscow Farmer’s Market, at Moscow-area nursery and garden stores and at Wise Buys Thrift Store, 110 S. Jackson in Moscow. The tour benefits the Sojourner Truth House for homeless women and children and the Troy, Idaho, food and clothing bank.

Planting for the future

It’s not too late to get free trees from the National Arbor Day Foundation.

Just join the foundation by Aug. 31 and the group will ship you flowering dogwoods, flowering crabapples, golden raintrees, Washington hawthorns and American redbuds.

To join: Send your name, address and a check for $10 to: 10 Free Flowering Trees, National Arbor Day Foundation, 100 Arbor Ave., Nebraska City, NE 68410.

Are your books run ragged?

Repair and restoration of family heirlooms require careful technique. A workshop titled “Paper Repair/Restoration” will be given Sept. 21 at 2 p.m. at the downtown Spokane Library. Gudrun Aurand, an expert in bookbinding and manuscript conservation, will cover repair of tears and holes in fragile volumes such as family Bibles or children’s books.

Participants can bring their projects to be used as examples. The workshop is free. For more information call 626-5312.

Bring shopping list and money

Gardeners don’t stop just because Labor Day rolls around. Those in the know, in Spokane at least, head for the annual Friends of Manito Plant Sale, which is always thick with perennials.

The sale is Sept. 7 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sept. 8 from noon to 3 p.m. As usual, get there early for the best selection. The proceeds benefit Manito Park projects.

Dinner in style

Dinner for six at a home designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in the Puget Sound area is one of a plethora of items and services up for bid in the Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy auction.

Silent bids will be taken through September and the auction will be held at the Seattle Art Museum Sept. 28. For a copy of the auction catalog and information about the auction, contact Sara-Ann Briggs, Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy, 343 S.
