Ex-Tribal Judge Killed In Collision With Freight Train

Former Shoshone-Bannock Tribal Judge Clyde Osborne was killed when his car was broadsided by a freight train.

The 75-year-old father of former Shoshone-Bannock Tribal Business Council Chairman Marvin Osborne died about 6:45 p.m. Thursday at the scene of the accident, Bingham County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Robert Sobieski said.

According to the accident report, Osborne was northbound on U.S. Highway 91, parallel with the Union Pacific Railroad tracks. He failed to see the train, which also was traveling north, and when he turned east on Ferry Butte Road, his car was struck on the passenger side, Sobieski said.

Union Pacific spokesman Ed Trandahl said the train was traveling about 38 mph. The train crossing at Ferry Butte Road is not marked with warning signals or a crossing gate. It does have a stop sign and a railroad crossing sign.

Osborne served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, fighting at Iwo Jima and Okinawa. In his later years, Osborne was active in area veterans affairs and in organizing tribal festivals on the Fort Hall Reservation.
