From Staff And Wire Reports

A woman fatally shot by a police officer after she fired a handgun at a paramedic trying to help her was identified Sunday as Patricia Sweany, 45, of Welches, police said.

Paramedics called police for help Saturday morning in dealing with the woman, who they believed was psychotic.

When an officer arrived on the scene in southeast Portland, Sweany pulled out a handgun and fired at ambulance attendant Kirk Wayne Ream, 39, of Aurora. The bullet struck his keychain.

Officer Scott Westerman, 30, returned fire, killing the woman.
