Thomas Fischer’s Research Earns Him Rank Of Fellow

Thomas Fischer, professor of electrical engineering at Washington State University, has earned the rank of fellow in the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.

Fischer’s research in electronic signal processing and data compression earned him the position.

He taught at Texas A&M before joining WSU in 1989. He has been a digital communications consultant to industry, a National Science Foundation grantee and has received outstanding teaching and prize research paper awards.

Six Washington students attending Gonzaga University are listed in the latest edition of Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges:

Jon Belzer, Chewelah; Kenneth Farrow, George Frankenfield, Karin Galbraith and John Perrine, all of Spokane; and Rebecca Munro, Colville.

Benjamin Philip Orth, Nine Mile Falls, and Michelle Renee Norton, Spokane, made the Dean’s List for the University of Montana’s autumn semester. Orth graduated from Lakeside High School with a perfect 4.0 grade point average. Norton is a 1995 graduate of Gonzaga Prep.

Samantha Schmehl, a freshman at Linfield College in McMinnville, Ore., has won four awards, three in parliamentary debate, for the Linfield Forensics Team. Schmehl is a political science major from Colbert.

Air Force Staff Sgt. Wendy Kerr, daughter of Jerry Matteson, Chewelah, Wash., and Glenna Matteson, Spokane, has been named noncommissioned officer of the quarter at Incirlik Air Base, Turkey, where she is an air traffic controller.

Selection for the award includes exemplary duty performance, job knowledge, leadership qualities and significant self-improvement.

Nathaniel James Hager, a freshman at Washington and Lee University, Lexington, Va., was named to the dean’s list for the fall term. Hager is the son of Sarah A. Hager, Mead, and Michael J. Hager, Napa, Calif.

Benjamin David Cartwright, Spokane, earned fall semester honors at Kansas State University.

Heather Anne Kennedy, Chattaroy, has been listed in Who’s Who Among American High School Students. Kennedy, daughter of Margaret J. Kennedy, Chattaroy, is a student at Riverside High School.
