Oregon Governor Resting At Home

Compiled From Wire Services

Gov. John Kitzhaber rested at home Friday after a night in the hospital to evaluate chest pains that apparently were not heart-related, aides said.

“The governor is in good condition and plans to rest at home through the weekend,” said Bob Applegate, Kitzhaber’s chief spokesman.

Kitzhaber’s personal physician, Dr. Tom Carey of Salem, “ruled out any cardiac problems” after extensive tests, the governor’s office said.

“The governor suffered a painful but minor injury most likely due to an over-strenuous workout” according to Carey, the governor’s office said.

Kitzhaber, 48, himself a physician, runs and lifts weights several mornings a week before going to work.

He went to Salem Hospital’s emergency room about 6:30 p.m. Thursday after feeling the pains while at the Capitol.

Kitzhaber earlier in the day had taken a helicopter tour of flooded areas, conferred with emergency officials and visited an emergency shelter in Salem.

Bill Wyatt, Kitzhaber’s chief of staff, said the governor was in regular telephone contact with his office Friday and keeping updated on the flood situation.

Kitzhaber planned to return to his office on Monday, Wyatt said.
