Group Seeks Funds To Move Statue
Since Congress won’t pay, proponents of relocating a statue of suffragists Susan B. Anthony, Lucretia Mott and Elizabeth Cady Stanton from its downstairs hideaway to the Capitol Rotunda began a drive Thursday to gather private funds for the move.
“We women are undaunted by the inequity of this requirement” to pay for the $75,000 move, said Joan Meacham, co-chair of the Woman Suffrage Statue Campaign. “We’re used to it.”
It appeared last year that Congress would provide money to move the statue. But three freshmen Republican congresswomen - Sue Myrick of North Carolina, Helen Chenoweth of Idaho and Linda Smith of Washington - said government funds should not be used and blocked the project.
