City Contractor Will Cut Down Dangerous Trees

Bruce Krasnow Staff writer

The city Parks Department has awarded a contract to Tall Tree Service of Eastern Washington to begin cutting 142 hazardous trees on the North Side.

All the trees coming down have been marked by a blue X and are on public rights of way. Letters have been mailed to adjacent property owners, said Debbie Clem-Olsen, city landscape architect.

The trees were identified in a recent inventory as being hazardous because they are dead or damaged and leaning over roads and sidewalks. Once removed, the stump will be ground and the hole backfilled and reseeded.

“We want it to look like they’ve never been there before,” said Clem-Olsen.

The cutting may start this week and is expected to be completed by the end of March. The affected area is from Sprague to Wellesley, and Perry west to the Spokane River.

For information on the trees, call Ron McIntyre at Tall Tree Service, 747-2445, or the city Parks Department at 625-6670.

Saving bar codes

The Corbin Senior Center is asking people to save UPC labels to help it purchase a 20-inch television.

Director Carolyn Bryan said the senior center is collecting UPC bar codes from Kodak film and camera products, Hershey food products, and Hefty, Baggies and OneZip products.

“We’re sure there are lots of folks in the community who would like to help us with our project,” Bryan said. “All they need to do is keep an eye for these proof-of-purchase labels and turn them into us.”

May 31 is the collection deadline.
