Farmers Recruited For Experimental Project

From Staff And Wire Reports

The Idaho Wheat Commission is recruiting two dozen farmers this year to grow an experimental hard white wheat for Korean noodle-makers.

Production of the crop is aimed at recouping sales lost over the years to Australian farmers, who were quick to offer hard white wheat that many Korean mills prefer.

The commission and U.S. Wheat Associates, an export marketing partner, hope to deliver 225,000 bushels to Korea in 1996. Last year, 14 Idaho farmers grew 42,000 bushels.

The hard white wheat will be planted this spring and grown under strict conditions set by the commission and the University of Idaho.

Because seed for the experimental crop is in short supply, the Spokane-based Washington Wheat Commission does not participate in the program. , DataTimes
