Tongue-Tied Attempt To Impress Girlfriend Gets Sixth-Grader Stuck To Frosty Flagpole

Carla K. Johnson Staff writer

Showing off for a girl can get a guy into some sticky situations.

That’s what a Cheney Middle School sixth-grader discovered Thursday morning when he found himself pinned to a flagpole - by his tongue.

On a dare, the boy touched his tongue to the frosty pole before school.

“His girlfriend told him, ‘If you really liked me you’d do it,”’ said Principal Ron VanHorne.

Anyone who has picked up an ice cube with wet fingers knows what happened next.

The boy’s tongue froze.

Meanwhile, school buses arrived and unloaded a host of gawking students.

A staff member rushed inside to alert the principal while another cautioned the boy to resist the urge to tear free.

The quick-thinking principal saved the day with a cup of water.

“I took a shortcut through the office, grabbed a big cup and put water in it, and went out there and poured it down the flagpole,” VanHorne said. “It warmed up enough so that it came off.”

The boy lost a bit of his tongue and a lot of his pride.

“He learned the biggest lesson he could,” VanHorne said. “Some of us become adults before we learn a lesson like that.”
