Herbert Hess Spokane
Memorial Service for Herbert C. Hess, 97, is scheduled for 1 p.m. today at Plymouth Congregational Church. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Hess, who was born in Chicago, died Thursday.
His family moved to Seattle in 1908.
After years of acting in civic-theater groups in Washington and California and working as a musician with dance bands and a timpanist with Puget Sound area orchestras, Hess joined the war effort.
In 1944 he enlisted as a drummer with the 590th Air Force Band, stationed at Galena Army Air Depot, forerunner of Fairchild Air Force Base. He later became a public relations specialist at Geiger Field, where he was the radio voice for war bond drives and special events in the area.
After his discharge in 1945, he worked for KXLY radio and then KFPY as an announcer, director and production manager. His popular “Old Time Party” and “Hayloft Jamboree” were Saturday-night radio fare of the era.
Hess then became staff announcer at KHQ radio, where he also produced and directed local radio entertainment. He later moved into radio advertising.
In 1969 he retired as an account executive with KXLY radio to pursue his interest in watercolor painting. His works hang in many Spokane businesses and offices and in many private homes throughout the state.
He was a lifetime member of the Spokane Watercolor Association and served as treasurer until his recent illnesses. He was a board member of the Spokane Lilac Festival Association and a past deacon of Heritage Congregational Church.
Survivors include his wife, Marguerite, and one daughter, Lynne Hess.
Pauline Arndt Palouse, Wash.
Service for Pauline Ann Arndt, 63, is scheduled for 2 p.m. today at the Kramer Funeral Home in Palouse. Private burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Palouse.
Mrs. Arndt, who was born in England, died Thursday.
She met her first husband, Air Force pilot Gerald Styer, while he was stationed in England. They married in 1952 in Palouse.
They were stationed in several areas, including Okinawa and Texas, before settling in Spokane in the late 1950s. He died in 1966.
In 1967 she moved her family to Palouse, where she has lived since.
She married Terry Arndt in 1970.
Survivors include her husband; five daughters, Cindy Kent of Palouse, Ronda Kayser of Moses Lake, Sondra Fosness and Tamra Beck, both of Bellevue, Wash., and Kathryn Styer of Ramsey, N.J.; one son, Paul Styer of Bellevue; her mother, Mable Weeden of Ramsgate, England; one brother, Mick Hughes of London; and five grandchildren.
Calvin Schnell Hayden Lake, Idaho
Memorial service for Calvin Arthur Schnell, 37, will be Saturday at 3 p.m. at English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene.
Mr. Schnell, who was born in Cranbrook, British Columbia, died Saturday of cancer.
He was raised and educated in Cranbrook before he moved to North Idaho. He was an owner-operator for United Van Lines.
Mr. Schnell enjoyed shooting pool, hunting, hockey, and spending time with family and friends.
Survivors include his wife of four years, Kathy; a daughter, Shelly, at home; his parents, Martin and Ailsa of Cranbrook; two brothers, Gordon and Allan, both of Cranbrook; and a sister, Heather Simpson of Golden, British Columbia.

Beatrice Glotfelty Coeur d’Alene
Service for Beatrice Glotfelty, 87, will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene.
Mrs. Glotfelty, who was born in St. Cloud, Minn., died Saturday.
She came to Coeur d’Alene in 1923 and was a homemaker.
She was a member of the Coeur d’Alene Methodist Church and the Rebekah Lodge.
Mrs. Glotfelty was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Harold.
Survivors include a son, Morris Tisdall of Sacramento; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Helen Hubbell Spokane
Service for Helen Kingsley Hubbell, 85, is scheduled for 11 a.m. today at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church. Interment will be at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home South is in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Hubbell, who was born in State Center, Iowa, died Wednesday.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Women of the Moose.
Her husband, Al Hubbell, died in 1973.
Survivors include one daughter, Loretta Kingsley Bremer of Spokane; six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Thelma Tetrick Spokane
A graveside service for Thelma Tetrick, 86, is scheduled for 10 a.m. today at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Tetrick, who was born in Harrington, Wash., died Friday.
She was a homemaker, and a member of St. Anne’s Catholic Church.
Survivors include her husband, Leland Tetrick; three granddaughters and four great-grandchildren.
Aaron ‘Red’ Stevens Coeur d’Alene
Service for Aaron “Red” Stevens, 85, will be today at 2 p.m. at Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene. Private burial will follow.
Mr. Stevens, who was born in Grand Island, Neb., died Saturday.
He moved to Coeur d’Alene in 1935.
He worked for the Idaho Highway Department for 14 years before retiring.
Mr. Stevens enjoyed ranch work and loved breaking horses. He also enjoyed needlework, quilting and drawing.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Edna; one son, Sydney Stevens of Bonners Ferry, Idaho; seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Ruth Fisher Newport, Wash.
Service for Ruth F. Fisher, 86, is scheduled for 2 p.m. today at the Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home in Newport, with burial at the Newport Cemetery.
Mrs. Fisher, who was born in Odessa, Wash., died Thursday.
She was a graduate of St. Luke’s Nursing School and worked for the old Newport Hospital before retiring in the late 1950s.
She was a member of the Newport Assembly of God Church.
Survivors include her daughter, Kathy Kruckenberg of Ellensburg; five sisters, Edna Nicholls of Spokane, Alice Els of Davenport, Wash., Delora Gies and Vera Zagelow of Odessa, Wash., and Arlene Meyer of Silverton, Ore.; and two grandsons.
Thure Johansson Spokane
Service for Thure H.V. Johansson, 91, is scheduled for 11 a.m. today at Hennessey Smith Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Spokane Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Johansson, who was born in Sweden, died Thursday.
He lived in Spokane for 70 years and was a member of the Carpenters Union.
His wife, Ruth Johansson, died previously.
Survivors include two sons, Glen Johansson of Spokane and David Johansson of Seattle; and two grandchildren.
Steven Price Spokane
Service for Steven L. Price, 22, is scheduled for 10 a.m. today at Riplinger Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.
Mr. Price, who was born in Shreveport, La., died Friday after a lengthy illness.
He was a 1992 graduate of John Rogers High School.
He was a member of Eagles Aerie No. 2.
Survivors include his parents, Elaine and Joseph Price of Spokane; two brothers, Kenneth Price of Boise and Joseph Price of Spokane; three sisters, Mary McKensie of Yakima, Dola Price of Austin, Texas, and Dolores Ellsworth of San Antonio, Texas; his grandmother, Dolores Cuneo of Spokane; and his great-grandmother, Mildred Nelson of Shelton, Wash.
Erick Krupke Spokane
Service for Erick H. Krupke, 99, is scheduled for 1 p.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Interment at Riverside Memorial Park will follow.
Mr. Krupke, who born in Paynesville, Minn., died Saturday.
He moved to Reardan, Wash., with his parents in 1904.
He farmed until his retirement in 1949.
Mr. Krupke was a member of Reardan United Methodist Church.
His wife, Helen Krupke, died in 1991.
Survivors include two sons, Carroll Krupke and Gordon Krupke, both of Reardan; two brothers, Eldred Krupke and Earl Krupke, both of Spokane; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
