Iverson Leads Georgetown Past Syracuse

Allen Iverson scored 26 points and Othella Harrington added 23 Monday night as sixth-ranked Georgetown defeated No. 17 Syracuse 83-64 at Landover, Md., the Orangemen’s third straight loss and fifth in seven games.

Freshman guard Victor Page added 17 points for the Hoyas (17-2, 7-1 Big East), while Otis Hill led Syracuse (13-5, 4-4) with 19 points.

(2) Kentucky 82, Georgia 77 At Athens, Ga., Tony Delk scored 29 points and the Wildcats (16-1, 6-0 Southeastern Conference) survived a furious Bulldogs (11-5, 2-4) rally for their 15th straight victory.

Georgia put together a 20-6 run to tie the game 65-65 on Carlos Strong’s 3-pointer with 8:43 to go. But the Bulldogs could never overtake the Wildcats, who scored the next five points to retain its lead.

(7) Villanova 69, Providence 65 At Villanova, Pa., Jason Lawson had 18 points, including six in the final 2 minutes, and Kerry Kittles added 15 as the Wildcats (15-3, 6-2 Big East) beat the Friars (9-7, 2-6).

Derrick Brown had a career-high 29 points for Providence. Brown, whose previous best was 19 points, was 12 of 18 from the field.

(9) Wake Forest 81, Virginia 64 At Winston-Salem, N.C., Tim Duncan scored 14 of his 20 points in the first half as the Demon Deacons (13-2, 5-1 ACC) downed the Cavaliers (7-8, 2-5).

Virginia’s Harold Deane hit 6 of 10 in the second half for a game-high 28 points.

(11) N. Carolina 82, Florida St. 71 At Tallahassee, Fla., Dante Calabria scored 19 points and the Tar Heels (14-4, 5-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) won their ninth straight game over the Seminoles (10-6, 2-4).

North Carolina held Florida State scoreless for more than 7 minutes midway through the game to open an 11-point advantage early in the second half.

(12) Memphis 86, Ala.-Birm. 77 At Memphis, Tenn., Lorenzen Wright scored 21 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the Tigers (13-3, 4-1 Conference USA) over the Blazers (13-7, 3-3).

Alabama-Birmingham led 76-74, but Memphis’ Mingo Johnson proceeded to make 4 of 6 free throws in the final 2 minutes.

(14) Penn St. 87, (19) Purdue 77 At State College, Pa., Pete Lisicky broke out of a shooting slump to score 13 points as the Nittany Lions (14-1, 5-1) took over sole possession of first place in the Big Ten with a win over the Boilermakers (14-4, 4-2).

Purdue led 33-32 late in the first half before Lisicky scored 10 straight points to put Penn State ahead to stay.

Maryland 65, (18) Clemson 60 At College Park, Md., Johnny Rhodes had 17 points and Keith Booth scored six of his 17 in the final 4:01 to help the Terrapins (9-6, 2-3 ACC) rally past the Tigers (12-3, 3-3).

Terrell McIntyre scored a career-high 22 points, including a career-best five 3-pointers, for the Tigers.

Mississippi 82, (21) Auburn 69 At Oxford, Miss., Keith Carter, one of only eight Mississippi players in uniform, scored 23 points as the Rebels (6-9, 1-5 Southeastern Conference) took a big lead early and hung on to upset the Tigers (15-4, 3-3).
