College Basketball Today

Stanford at WSU

The Cougars (8-6, 1-5 Pacific-10 Conference) take on the Cardinal (10-5, 4-3) at Friel Court at 3 p.m.

At a glance: WSU is 0-3 at home against league opponents and are in the Pac-10 cellar with Oregon State and Arizona State. The return of senior forward Mark Hendrickson generated an emotional spark - not to mention 27 points and 14 rebounds - in Thursday night’s 87-79 loss to Cal. But it did not generate a win. Stanford, one of the preseason favorites - along with WSU to compete for the conference title, comes in short-handed with 7-foot sophomore Tim Young not having played since December because of a bulging disk in his back. How well Brevin Knight defends WSU point guard Donminic Ellison could be the difference.

Stanford: Knight 15.4 ppg, 7.4 apg; Cross 15.0 ppg; Andy Poppink 13.9 ppg, 7.5 rpg. WSU: Isaac Fontaine 18.9 ppg, 6.1 rpg; Hendrickson 18.3 ppg, 10.4 rpg; Ellison 14.3 ppg, 5.2 apg.

TV/radio: No TV; KXLY (920 AM) Spokane, KCLX (1450 AM) Colfax, KWSU (1250 AM) Pullman, KCVL (1240 AM) Colville, KZFN (106.0 FM) Moscow, KBSN (1470 AM) Moses Lake, with Bud Nameck, 2:30.

Gonzaga at Portland

Gonzaga (13-4, 4-1 West Coast Conference) takes on the Pilots (11-6, 2-3) in a West Coast Conference game at 7:30 p.m. in the Chiles Center. GU and Portland’s women open the doubleheader.

At a glance: GU applied a 95-72 spanking on Portland at the Martin Centre on Wednesday. Portland was helpless to stop the Bulldogs’ interior offense as Jon Kinloch (25 points), Paul Rogers (19) and Scott Snider (18) combined to make 70 percent of their shots. The Pilots, however, have won 18 of 19 at home. The key for Portland is keeping center Greg Klosterman out of foul trouble.

Gonzaga: Rogers, 15.7 ppg, 8.1 rpg; Kyle Dixon, 5.4 apg.

Portland: Kweemada King, 14.7 ppg; Lemont Daniels, 6.3 rpg; Dionn Holton, 3.8 apg.

Radio: KJRB (790 AM), with Dick Wright, 7:15.

Northern Arizona at Idaho

The Lumberjacks (4-12, 1-4 Big Sky Conference) visit the Vandals (8-7, 2-2 Big Sky) at 7:05 in the Kibbie Dome.

At a glance: Idaho has needed come-from-behind heroics to defeat NAU in Moscow the last two years. UI is on a scoring binge, shooting of 60, 54, 66 and 55 percent in its last four games. Consistent with coach Joe Cravens’ three-man inside rotation, Nate Gardner and Jason Jackman will start with Harry Harrison taking his turn off the bench. Reserve forward Bjorn Magnussen, suspended for probation violations, is done for the year, and maybe for good.

Idaho: Reggie Rose, 13.9 ppg, 3.4 apg; Harrison, 9.8 rpg. NAU: Charles Thomas, 12.6 ppg, 3.8 apg; Scott Taylor, 6.2 rpg.

Radio: KPRL (1400 AM) in Moscow; KVNI (1080 AM) in Coeur d’Alene.

Weber State at Eastern Washington

The Wildcats (10-8, 2-3 Big Sky Conference) visit the Eagles (2-13, 0-4) at Reese Court at 7:05 p.m.

At a glance: After EWU allowed Northern Arizona to break an 18-game road losing streak Thursday, Eagles coach Steve Aggers hinted at a lineup change.

Weber State: Jimmy DeGraffenried, 20.6 ppg, 7.0 rpg; Ryan Cuff, 5.1 apg. EWU: D’mitri Rideout, 12.2 ppg; Adam Dean, 6.1 rpg.

Radio: KSBN (1230 AM), with Larry Weir, 6:40.
