Macfarlane Homers Defeat Cleveland

Mike Macfarlane homered twice in a game for the second time in five days, and the Kansas City Royals handed Charles Nagy his first loss since April 27 by defeating the Cleveland Indians 4-2 Monday night in Cleveland.

Macfarlane hit his eighth and ninth homers of the season, both solo shots, off Nagy (11-2). The Royals catcher has seven homers in 14 games.

Chris Haney (6-6) retired the last 14 batters he faced and finished with a seven-hitter for his third complete game of the season.

Yankees 2, Red Sox 0

New York

Mike Aldrete’s opposite-field homer started a two-run seventh inning that carried Jimmy Key and New York to victory over Boston.

Aldrete’s homer, his fourth of the season but first since being acquired by the Yankees June 12, was hit into the lower deck in left field leading off the seventh.

Orioles 7, Blue Jays 4

Toronto

Brady Anderson hit his major league-leading 28th home run of the season and Roberto Alomar had two hits and scored two runs to lead Baltimore over Toronto.

Rangers 8, Angels 6

Anaheim, Calif.

Juan Gonzalez drove in four runs and Mickey Tettleton and Dean Palmer hit consecutive homers in the sixth inning as Texas beat California.

Brewers 2, Tigers 0

Detroit

Knuckleballer Steve Sparks and three relievers combined to blank Detroit for Milwaukee’s first shutout of the season.

Sparks (4-6), recalled from Triple-A New Orleans earlier in the day, scattered six hits with two strikeouts and no walks in seven innings for the Brewers, who evened their road record at 20-20.

Twins 10, White Sox 7

Chicago

Rick Aguilera threw a six-hitter for seven innings and four Minnesota players drove in two runs each as the Twins held on for a victory over Chicago.

Clearing the bases

Mark McGwire of the Oakland Athletics (.329 on 27 for 82, with a league-leading 14 homers and 25 RBIs) and Orel Hershiser of the Cleveland Indians (5-0 with a 1.83 ERA) won player and pitcher awards for the month of June… . Reggie Jefferson of Boston was honored as player of the week after hitting .571 on 12 for 21 with two homers, two triples, two homers and seven RBIs.

Baltimore’s Luis Polonia is 2 for 31 over his last 11 games… . Ed Sprague’s 21 homers before the All-Star break are the second most in Toronto club history… . The Blue Jays wore red tops with Canada written on the back and red caps in honor of Canada Day, Canada’s equivalent to July 4.

Detroit’s Bobby Higginson extended his hitting streak to a career-best 11 games with a third-inning single… . Albert Belle’s selection to the A.L. All-Star team makes him the first Cleveland position player to be an All-Star four consecutive years since outfielder Larry Doby did it seven straight years, 1949-55… . Mike Aldrete’s home run was the first by any Yankee other than Bernie Williams since June 23, when Tino Martinez homered. Williams has five homers in that span.
