Gray Whale Freed From Fishing Net
An immature, 35-foot gray whale was freed after it became entangled in a fishing net near the entrance of Neah Bay.
The whale was reported stuck about 6:30 p.m. Saturday. The Coast Guard, the Makah Indian Tribe, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and fisherman all responded, and the whale was untangled by 9:15 p.m., the Coast Guard said in a news release.
It was last seen swimming to sea. A larger whale, possibly the trapped whale’s mother, approached during the operation and was monitored by rescuers, the Coast Guard said.
