Wohelo Award Earned By Kristine Melis

Kristine Melis, a recent graduate of North Central High School, earned her Wohelo award from Camp Fire Boys and Girls. Melis was a member of the National Honor Society and the tennis and gymnastics teams.

She received a $13,000 scholarship from Mills College.

The following high school students received Army Reserve National Scholar/Athlete Awards. Josh Bangert and Delena Schurger, Columbia High School, Hunters, Wash.; Andrew Braff and Laney White, Colville High School, Colville, Wash.; Matt Meek and Bekah Bridges, Cusick High School, Cusick, Wash.; Jeremy Rogers and Johanna O’Neal, Jenkins High School, Chewelah, Wash.; and Joelle Kaatz, Curlew High School, Curlew, Wash.

The winners were announced for the Spokane Home Builders Association’s Annual Showcase of Homes. In the $300,000 and below price category, Prairie Sunset built by Brian Wilkes, Wilkes Construction; in the $300,001-$450,000 price category, The Craftsman by George Paras, Paras Construction Inc.; in the $450,001 and up price category, La Maison du Roc, by Mike Murphy, Murphy Custon Construction Inc.

Robert Mather, Beltone Hearing Aid Center, Spokane, was honored with the title of Master Hearing Instrument Specialist. The title of Master Specialist goes to hearing aid specialists and audiologists who have done an excellent job in the areas of customer service, professionalism, patient education and patient satisfaction.

Renee Chicoine, a student at Lakeside High School, has been named an All-American Scholar. She is the daughter of Pat and Karen Chicoine.

Johanna Smith, Mead, was one of 14 recipients of a 1996 H.C. Piper Scholarship by the Piper Jaffray Co.

A sophomore at the University of Idaho, she received the Outstanding Sophomore Achievement Award. She is a residence hall president, reporter for the campus paper, and a member of the Communications Student Association. She is the daughter of Carey Smith, Spokane, and Joseph Sapp, Tri-Cities.

Ryan Vold, a 1996 senior at Sprague (Wash.) High School, has completed the requirements of the Gold Congressional Award. He will travel to Washington, D.C. in January 1997 to claim his award.

Vold completed 600 hours of expedition activity as a People to People ambassador to New Zealand and Australia and completed 325 hours of physical fitness activity in football and weightlifting. He received the Presidential Sports Award and Most Improved Player award for football during his junior year. < Desirae Victor, a senior at Sprague High School, received an award in the National American Sheep Industry Women’s Congressional Letter Writing Contest. She was one of 11 top winners.

Timothy Ruzicki, son of Dorothy and Gerald Ruzicki, Mead, graduated from Macalester College, St. Paul, Minn. He is a graduate of Mead High School.

Michelle Semple, Spokane, received her college degree from Beloit College, Beloit, Wis.

Spokane School District’s staffers of the year were recently honored with awards sponsored by PEMCO: Michael Folsom, Indian education counselor; Marilyn Morgan, music office secretary/ clerk; Mari Brown, Finch Elementary School teacher; and Gert Schweim, Chase Middle School office manager.

Dr. Brian Talbott, superintendent of Educational Service District 101 in Spokane, was awarded a 1996 WASA Leadership Award from the Washington Association of School Administrators. Talbott is president of the American Association of Educational Service Agencies.

Sgt. Mark Sterk of the Spokane Police Department received the 1996 Robert D. Panther Law Enforcement Officer of the Year award presented by the Exchange Club of Downtown Spokane.

Jane Orr, director of planned giving at Gonzaga University, was appointed to the education committee of the National Committee on Planned Giving.

Sarah Menard, a junior at North Central High School, was the winner of a citywide essay contest sponsored by the Spokane Masonic Temple Foundation. She won $100 for being North Central’s winner and an additional $500 for winning overall.
