Spokane’s Best Preps Defeated

The Seafirst Select Spokane All-Star boys lost to Canton (Ohio) 69-62 in overtime Tuesday at the Nike national prep basketball tournament in Las Vegas.

Chris Anderson of Shadle Park scored 22 points and Eric Carlson of University 15 for Spokane. The team finished the tournament with a 2-6 record.

Cheney’s Anna Getz had 32 points and seven assists as the Spokane Stars split a pair of games at the AAU U15 girls national tournament in Nashville, Tenn.

Spokane beat Western Pennsylvania 68-60 before losing to No. 1 seed Indiana 64-57. Molly Carlson of Selkirk had 13 points and 11 rebounds in the win for Spokane, which meets North Carolina today for a spot in the final 16 at the 80-team tourney.

Central Rockford (Ill.) beat the Spokane Stars 54-51 at the AAU U14 girls tournament at Nashville.

The Stars, 0-4 at the tourney, missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer. Kara Weitman had 17 points and three steals for Spokane, which fell into the consolation shootout.

Golf

The 20th annual Washington Junior Golf Association state championship begins today and runs through Friday at Manito Golf and Country Club, Hangman Valley Golf Course and Wandermere Golf Course.

Entering with the best scores from the District 5 championship are Ryan Benzel, Ritzville, boys 15-17; Britney Holt, Spokane, girls 15-17; Matt Kodama, Mead, boys 12-14; Jaime Seefried, Spokane, girls 12-14; and Eric Hastings, Spokane, boys 8-11.

Legion baseball

Grant Reeves was plunked by a pitch with two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth, leading the North Stars over the Blue Devils 11-10 in an AAA game at Jackson Field.

Reeves, who earlier homered, was hit by Jeremy Affeldt, the fourth Blue Devils pitcher. Rob Elmer went 4 for 5 for the North Stars. The Blue Devils’ Ryan Corigliano was 4 for 6, with a double and four runs batted in.
