San Francisco Standout Faces Hand Surgery

From Wire Reports

San Francisco 49ers center Jesse Sapolu fractured a bone in his right hand during Thursday’s team practice.

The All-Pro veteran was scheduled for surgery today to have a pin inserted in the metacarpal bone. He will wear a cast for a week and then practice with a taped hand.

Sapolu, 35, will be replaced by fourth-year offensive lineman Chris Dalman. He broke the bone during a pass-blocking drill while pushing defensive end Roy Barker.

In other camp news, fullback William Floyd, who underwent reconstructive surgery to his right knee last year, is optimistic he will return to action sometime in October. The injury had been considered career-threatening.

Also, former California running back Russell White had a tryout with the 49ers but reportedly was overweight.

Vikings sign Clemons and Tally

Minnesota, badly in need of help at outside linebacker, agreed to a five-year, $5.75 million contract with first-round pick Duane Clemons.

The Vikings also signed 13-year veteran Darryl Talley to help fill the void created at outside linebacker when Eddie McDaniel went down with a knee injury this week.

Terms of Talley’s one-year contract were not released.

Bengals assistant charged

Tim Krumrie, the Cincinnati Bengals’ defensive line coach, was arrested on a drunken driving charge this week at Wimington, Ohio.

The State Highway Patrol arrested him at about 3:30 a.m. Monday in Richland Township, not far from the Bengals’ training camp at Wilmington College. The patrol charged Krumrie with drunken driving and driving left of center on the road.

Krumrie played for the Bengals as a nose tackle from 1983-94.

Around the league

Marty Schottenheimer rewarded his players for last season’s 13-3 record by opening the Chiefs training camp later than any other NFL squad. The Chiefs will conduct their first full workout in pads on Saturday at their complex in River Falls, Wis.

New England’s first-round draft pick, Terry Glenn from Ohio State, missed his second day of practice after having six stitches to close a gash in his chin, suffered when he was hit by another player’s helmet on Wednesday.

Detroit’s Herman Moore has gone home because of back spasms, and Brett Perriman, who reported to camp late because of a contract dispute, has yet to practice as he continues rehabilitation from a knee injury suffered in last season’s playoff loss to Philadelphia.
