Playfair License Sought

Formal application for a license to operate Playfair Race Course will go to the Washington State Horse Racing Commission in Olympia this week.

Phil Ziegler of the Muckleshoot Indian Tribal Casino said Monday the tribe’s application “is being finalized as we speak.”

The Muckleshoot will request 1996 racing dates that have been reserved for the Spokane track - the September-through-January window announced May 21.

Still to be resolved is the share of the parimutuel wagering handle generated at the new track at Auburn that goes to off-track betting interests. The Muckleshoot Casino is the second-largest off-track betting site in the state. Emerald Downs has proposed a 3.5 percent cut in the Casino’s take.

Legion baseball

Nick Schuerman delivered a three-run double in the fourth and Chris Kreider had a two-run double in the sixth as the Bandits blanked the Cannons 10-0 in AAA American Legion baseball Monday at Jackson Field.

Eric Sandberg, who also had a two-run double, pitched a one-hitter, struck out 11 and walked seven.

Golf

Local knowledge paid dividends for Chris Mitchell in the Pro-Ladies stop on the Athletic Round Table Pro-Am series Monday at Sun Dance.

Mitchell, the Sun Dance pro, put together a 5-under-par 65 (34-31) to claim first place by a stroke over Mike Rorholm of Manito.

Three other pros broke par and four matched it, including senior leader Bill Sproule of Okanogan Valley.

Megan Field of Manito led the women with a 5-over-par 77, two shots better than Susie Stone, also Manito.

Net leaders were Gretchen Emrich, Pine Acres, 0-15 handicaps, 64; Vicki Latell, Sun Dance, 16-23, 66; and Ann Carey, Sun Dance, 24-36, 62.

Patti Marquis led the winning team from Painted Hills to a 114.

Bill Porter of Quincy shot a 69-71-140 in Rockville, Md., to qualify for the 96th United States Open Championship at Oakland Hills Country Club in Birmingham, Mich., June 13-16.
