U.N. Staffer Suspected Of Forgery, Embezzling
The United Nations has waived diplomatic immunity in the case of an American suspected of embezzling $200,000 from a U.N. agency in Geneva, a U.N. spokesman said Monday. The waiver clears the way for his arrest by local authorities.
U.N. spokesman Sylvana Foa said the American employee, whose name was not released, would be moved from a Swiss hospital where he is undergoing treatment to a “more secure facility,” presumably a prison clinic.
Foa did not say when an arrest might be made. She also did not specify his ailment.
On Friday, U.N. officials said the staffer was suspected of forging documents and embezzling from the U.N. Conference on Trade and Development, or UNCTAD.
