Gooden Rolls On; Fans Bang On Belle

Associated Press

American League

Dwight Gooden won for the sixth time in seven decisions and Derek Jeter hit a two-run single three pitches after a souvenir bat was thrown toward Cleveland left fielder Albert Belle as the New York Yankees beat the visiting Indians 4-3.

Play was halted twice because of fans throwing objects at Belle.

Jeter’s sixth-inning single came shortly after a small bat was tossed in Belle’s direction. The Indians left the field briefly in the seventh after Yankees fans again took aim on the controversial slugger, whose appeal of a five-game suspension was completed before the game.

A management source familiar with the hearing said the Cleveland star’s five-game suspension may be reduced to three games.

Gooden (6-4) gave up two runs and seven hits over eight innings, retiring 15 of 16 after Jim Thome homered leading off the fourth inning.

Milwaukee

Greg Vaughn’s three-run homer sparked Milwaukee past Oakland hours after a stadium board rejected a financing plan, which could doom major league baseball in Wisconsin.

The vote leaves in doubt whether the projected $250 million retractable-roof Miller Park will ever be built, and the team contends it cannot survive in antiquated County Stadium.

Red Sox 4, Rangers 3

Mo Vaughn’s 23rd homer of the season snapped an eighth-inning tie with Texas and gave Boston its fourth straight victory.

Orioles 6, Royals 1

Kansas City, Mo.

Mike Mussina gave up seven hits in his second complete game as Baltimore beat Kansas City.

Mussina (9-3) struck out four, walked one and retired the last 13 batters.

Mussina, who had a 9.85 ERA his five previous starts, improved his career record against Kansas City to 9-1, including 6-0 in eight starts in Kauffman Stadium.

Tigers 5, Twins 4

Minneapolis

Cecil Fielder and Tony Clark hit solo homers, leading Detroit to a win over Minnesota.

Angels 7, Blue Jays 4

Anaheim, Calif.

Tim Wallach hit a two-run homer to snap a tie and Jason Grimsley settled down after a rocky start as California won its sixth straight come-from-behind game, beating Toronto.

xxxx RIPKEN SETS ANOTHER MARK Cal Ripken played in his 2,216th consecutive game Friday night, breaking the world record held by Japan’s Sachio Kinugasa. Ripken was given a standing ovation when the game became official at the start of the sixth inning. He went 0 for 4, striking out once and grounding into a double play in the seventh inning.
