Sonics Let Air Out Of Jordan Seattle Gives Fans Reason For Hope With Decisive 89-78 Victory Over The Chicago Bulls In Game 5
Thousands of rowdy Seattle SuperSonics fans took to the streets Friday night in celebration of their team’s 89-78 victory over the Chicago Bulls in Game 5 of the NBA Finals.
“We knew they could do it. We always knew what kind of team they had,” said Melvyn Poll of Seattle.
“They’re clearly a competitor,” added his wife, Rosalind.
The raucous crowds formed an impromptu parade down the street directly in front of KeyArena, honking horns and waving placards, including one that read: “(Dennis) Rodman’s new tattoo: (Shawn) Kemp’s footprint.”
After watching their team drop the first three games of the championship series, Sonics fans were treated to back-to-back victories over Michael Jordan and the rest of the Bulls. Seattle pummeled the Bulls 107-86 during Wednesday’s Game 4.
Jordan had 26 points, but was held to just 2 points in the fourth quarter. Gary Payton led the Sonics with 23 points.
The Sonics’ victory sends the NBA Finals back to Chicago for Game 6 on Sunday. Chicago, seeking its fourth NBA title in the ‘90s, leads the best-of-seven series 3-2. The Sonics are trying to become the first team in NBA history to rebound from a 0-3 deficit to win the finals.
