Geyser Burns Woman Touring Yellowstone

Associated Press

A 57-year-old woman was burned after breaking through a fragile surface crust and into a Yellowstone National Park geyser, park officials said Friday.

Marlys A. Smith of Rockford, Ill., was walking off the trail Wednesday toward thermal features near Steady Geyser in the Lower Geyser Basin of the park. The park said in a release that Smith broke through the crust and into scalding water.

Smith received first- and second-degree burns to her right foot and lower leg. She was treated and released at the Old Faithful Clinic that day.
