Chicago Signs Conway To Four-Year Contract

From Wire Reports

The Chicago Bears signed wide receiver Curtis Conway to a four-year, $10 million contract on Monday, making him the third team member to receive a contract this year worth more than $2 million per season.

Conway, a restricted free agent, caught 62 passes for 1,037 yards and 12 touchdowns last season for the Bears.

The deal, which includes a $3 million signing bonus, goes to a receiver who is coming off his first good season in three NFL seasons. It lessens the chances of the Bears re-signing last year’s other starting wide receiver, Jeff Graham, who is a free agent.

Conway joins defenders Alonzo Spellman and Bryan Cox in getting Bears contracts in excess of $2 million a year.

Conway has a total of 120 receptions for 1,814 yards and 16 TDs in his three years in Chicago.

Giants retain Hampton

The New York Giants matched the six-year, $16.45 million offer sheet - including a $3.7 million signing bonus - that running back Rodney Hampton received from the San Francisco 49ers.

Saying he was impressed with how quickly the Giants reacted, Hampton said, “They really wanted me back and I’m happy to be back.”

Tagliabue pleads for action

At Cleveland, NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue appealed to skeptical city council members to move quickly in approving the league’s offer to restore pro football to Cleveland by 1999.

The NFL wants the council to approve the deal this week so owners can give their final approval at a meeting next Monday.

“We are trying to weigh every element of this, and it is truly up in the air,” council president Jay Westbrook said.
