Blackhawks Can’t Escape Injury Woes

Christine Reagan was in a familiar-yet-unfamiliar situation Wednesday, coming off the bench for the Cheney Blackhawks.

At last year’s girls State AA-quarterfinals, Reagan, then a non-starting junior, helped rescue Cheney when 6-foot-3 senior Jenny Hoots left the game with an injured ankle.

Reagan started 14 games this year and averaged 13.7 points for Cheney before tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in her right knee. She received medical clearance to play in last Saturday’s District 7-AA title game against East Valley, and accompanied the Blackhawks to state.

Reagan, sporting a large brace, substituted late in the first quarter on Wednesday. Although the injury limited her mobility, she topped Cheney with nine rebounds.

Wheelin’

Speaking of injuries to Cheney senior posts, Rick DeMulling of the Blackhawks was escorted onto the court in a wheelchair during the introduction of non-starters prior to the early afternoon game against Lynden.

DeMulling, 6-4 and the team’s leading scorer, dislocated his left ankle during practice Monday. DeMulling said he doesn’t remember how the injury occurred, but he may have stepped on his own foot.

At first DeMulling wasn’t certain he’d make the trip to Tacoma, but the injury doesn’t require surgery so he was fitted with a soft cast.

DeMulling, wearing the cast nearly up to his knee, watched Cheney’s loss from a prime location behind the bench.

Style, no substance

Selah’s played adopted the Slick Watts look - headbands to hold down little or no hair - for their opener against Blanchet.

After helping to dust off Selah 75-47, Blanchet’s Jon Minter offered his opinion of the ‘banded style: “Well, I guess it takes all kinds to make up this world.”
