Whit Women Capture Relay Title

The Whitworth women’s 800 freestyle team won the school’s first national relay title Friday at the NAIA Swimming and Diving National Championships in San Antonio, Texas.

Pirates Dorian Reese, Carley Bush, Joan Okata and Shannon Braun swam the distance in 7 minutes, 50.39 seconds. Pacific Lutheran was second with a time of 7:53.76.

Whitworth heads into today’s final round of competition in third place with 275 points. Puget Sound leads the women’s standings with 387 and is followed by Simon Fraser at 333.

In the men’s competition, the Pirates’ Jerry Rice finished second in the 400 individual medley in 4:08.02. John Brown College’s Bill Seabert won the event in 4:05.95.

Rice lost several seconds off his 400 IM time after his goggles filled with water and he was forced to turn onto his back to empty them.

Whitworth’s men are in second place with 269.5 points. Puget Sound leads with 437.5.
