Whitworth Offering Christian Drama Fest

“The Shunning,” a play about a Mennonite farmer who questions the teachings of his church, will be staged at 7 p.m. Sunday in the Seeley G. Mudd Chapel on the Whitworth College campus.

The Patrick Friesen play begins the Whitworth Theater Department’s 1996 Festival of Christian Drama.

Following the play, John Yoder, history and political studies professor, will lead a discussion about the relationship between one’s individual faith and the Christian community.

Other festival plays will be “Stories from the National Enquirer” on April 14 at 7 p.m. Diana Trotter, drama professor, will lead the post-play discussion.

“Refuge of Lies” by Ron Reed will be staged May 5 at 7 p.m. Following the performance, Reed will head a discussion about the play, his work and the role of the Christian artist in today’s culture.

Lenten remembrances

An ecumenical group of Christians will meet at 4 p.m. Friday at the site of a shooting last year at Argonne and Buckeye to mark the seventh and eighth stations of the cross: burden and lamentation.

Every Friday during Lent, lay people and clergy alike are led through the various events Christ experienced before his crucifixion.

The Lenten Friday Remembrance Guild is sponsoring the series that convenes in various parts of the city for the observances.

On March 22, the stations of vulnerability, violence and cruelty will be observed at the Women’s Drop In Center, 218 S. Howard.

The site for stations 12, 13 and 14 - death, desertion and completion - on March 29 has not been determined.

The seven-week event concludes on Good Friday, April 5, with a gathering in Riverfront Park.

Confronting bigotry

“Confronting Bigotry: The Camp PEACE Model” is the theme for the annual meeting of the Spokane Council of Ecumenical Ministries at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Highland Park United Methodist Church, 611 S. Garfield.

The Rev. John Olson, the ministries’ executive director, will discuss Camp PEACE (People Everywhere Are Created Equal).

“It’s a hands-on experience that will equip participants with tools to deal with bigotry when they face it in individuals and groups,” Olson said.

The organization will also elect board members and adopt a budget at the meeting.
