Bulldogs Felled 10-1; Pac-10 Honors Ruff

Martin Heminger pitched seven innings, giving up just one hit, as San Diego State pounded Gonzaga University 10-1 Monday in college baseball at Charlie Smith Field in San Diego.

Donnie Murrell picked up GU’s only hit with an RBI-single in the third inning that scored Matt Brunell, who led off the inning with a walk, and tied the game at 1-1.

The Aztecs (17-8-1) broke open the game with a three-run fifth and a four-run sixth. David Sanchez and Stewart Smothers each drove in two runs.

Gonzaga (5-6) travels to UCLA for a night game today.

Basketball

Washington State senior forward Jenni Ruff is the Pacific-10 Conference women’s basketball player of the week.

Ruff, in collecting her third player of the week honor this season, amassed 68 points and 21 rebounds as the Cougars split with the Los Angeles area schools last weekend.

She had 35 points, nine rebounds, four assists and two steals in an 88-81 overtime win over UCLA and had 33 points, 12 rebounds, two steals and a blocked shot in an 87-81 loss to Southern Cal. It was her 13th double-double of the season.

The outburst gave her the Pac10 scoring title. She had a 23.6 average, knocking Oregon State’s Tanja Kostic out of the lead for the first time since Dec. 18.

Golf

A meeting of the Deer Park Golf Club men’s and ladies’ clubs is scheduled for 7 p.m. March 21 at the Eagles Club in Deer Park.
