Substance Abuse Class Added
Eighth-graders in Coeur d’Alene schools have a new required class on how to avoid substance abuse.
On Monday, the Coeur d’Alene school board approved a new 10-week curriculum to help bolster students’ resistance to drug and alcohol abuse before they enter high school.
The class will be held during their physical education period, said secondary education director Judy Drake.
Students now get substance abuse prevention training through the DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program in fifth grade and in health class in seventh grade. The new program will reinforce those lessons, Drake said.
The new course was developed by Cornell University Medical Center.
The lesson materials are being purchased with state tobacco tax revenue that has been designated for substance abuse prevention programs.
In other business, the school board formally authorized a levy election on May 21 to raise $9.5 million over two years for the construction of a third middle school.
The board also voted to hold a full day of classes March 29 for high school students to make up for time missed during emergency closure days this winter.
