Peltier Denied Parole Again

Associated Press

American Indian activist Leonard Peltier, serving consecutive life sentences for killing two FBI agents on a South Dakota reservation in 1975, has been denied parole for a second time.

The U.S. Parole Commission announced Thursday that it had rejected Peltier’s request on Monday. Public announcement was delayed until the 51-year-old member of the American Indian Movement was informed.

The commission reaffirmed its previous decision, made when Peltier initially was denied parole in 1993, to hold its next full reconsideration hearing for him in December 2008.

Last December, a parole hearing examiner recommended that Peltier be denied parole but also that the full commission re-evaluate his role in the murders.
