Hastings Leads Ferris To Golf Title
Senior Andy Hastings of Ferris won the Inland Empire Golf tournament Monday at Indian Canyon, and in doing so, helped the Saxons to their first ever team championship.
Hastings, also the winner as freshman, shot a 1-over par 73 to beat Barry Walters of West Valley of Yakima by two strokes. A trio of players were at 75.
The top twenty-five Greater Spokane League finishers advance to the GSL tournament Wednesday at Wandermere. The top eight from there go on to state.
In the team competition, Ferris outlasted Coeur d’ Alene 305 to 314. Wenatchee was third at 319 followed by Central Valley at 321.
Softball
JuliAna Cook scored the winning run in the top of the 11th as North Central (11-5) beat Ferris (5-11) 3-2 in a GSL game.
Janelle Karstens had 10 strikeouts and reliever Shanelle Test added nine for the Indians. Test got the win.
In other GSL action, Rogers beat Lewis and Clark 3-2 and Central Valley knocked off Mead 8-5.
At Rogers, Angie Vulcano hit a one-out game-winning single in the bottom of the seventh that scored Mandy Flores and the Pirates (7-9) kept their postseason hopes alive with the win over the Tigers (3-13).
Susan Winkler had a solo home run in the sixth for LC.
At Mead, Wendy Reed drove in three runs as the Bears (10-6) dropped the Panthers (12-4) out of a first-place tie with idle University.
Wendy Stredwick had a solo homer and two RBI as East Valley (8-4) routed Pullman (0-9) 14-2 in a Frontier League contest.
Olympic torch
Launi Meili, 1992 Olympic gold medalist in shooting from Cheney, will be among those carrying the Olympic torch today in Seattle when it passes through Washington on its nationwide tour to Atlanta and the 1996 Games this summer.
Meili, also an Olympian in 1988, won the gold in three-position small-bore rifle in Barcelona in 1992. She also placed 11th in air rifle.
Basketball
The last day to register for a guaranteed place in Hoopfest is Friday.
The annual 3-on-3 tournament, the largest of its kind in the country, is June 29-30 on the streets of downtown Spokane.
Registration fee for adult recreation is $80, up $5 from last year. Open division is $100 and youth grades 3 through 8 $60.
Registration will be accepted through May 31, but teams signing up after Friday are not guaranteed a place in the event that last year drew 3,635 teams.
Hugh Watson, the new North Idaho College men’s coach, will be at the NIC Booster Club luncheon today at noon at the Iron Horse Restaurant in Coeur d’Alene.
The meeting is open to the public, though seating is limited. Cost is $5.50 for a buffet lunch.
