U.S. Women Pound Cuba

Compiled From Wire Services

The United States, the Olympic favorite in women’s basketball, got 22 points from Katrina McClain before she was injured, and beat Cuba 108-80 in an international, pre-Olympic tournament game.

McClain landed awkwardly on her right ankle late in the game and had to be carried from the court. Coach Tara Vanderveer said it was too early to determine how serious the injury was, but added it did not appear to be a break.

Ruthie Bolton added 18 points for the U.S., and Sheryl Swoopes had 15 as the U.S. raised its record to 18-0 in international competition and 40-0 overall. Vamilet Martinez led Cuba with 24 points.
