Cheney Overwhelmed 4-1 In State Aa Soccer Opener

West Valley/Yakima scored four second-half goals in a 15-minute span to overwhelm Cheney 4-1 on Saturday in the first round of the State AA soccer tournament in Cheney.

Beginning at the 61-minute mark of the second half, the Rams (17-1-1) put the Blackhawks (11-6-1) away with two goals from Andrew Miller and one apiece from David Burke and Aaron Heinzen.

Jack Shamp scored for Cheney.

Baseball

Colville defeated Cheney 2-1 to take a 1-0 lead in their best-of-three series that determines the Frontier League’s representative to state.

Game 2 was postponed due to rain. The series resumes Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Cheney (12-7).

Colville (14-6) produced all its offense in the top of the third, when Bradey Noble drove in Andy Hardison and Jared Bateman with a triple.

Mead’s 9-7 win over Gonzaga Prep (11-7) at Seafirst Stadium put the Panthers (12-6) in a winner-to-regionals game against Central Valley (11-5).

Rain postponed the CV/Mead game. It will be played Monday at 1 p.m. at Seafirst.

Against Prep, Mead’s Matt Armitage was 2 for 3 with three RBIs, and Grant Reeves went 2 for 2 and stole three bases.

In the Northeast A district tournament, Colfax earned the No. 1 seed to state with an 8-7 win over Medical Lake, the No. 2 seed.

For the Bulldogs, K.C. Becker and Fletcher Faulie each had three hits.

Softball

Kettle Falls and Newport advanced to the championship game at the Northeast A district tournament at Waterfront Park in Medical Lake, before rain washed out the rest of the schedule.

The seeding games to Wednesday’s District 7 AA-A fastpitch tournament will be played Monday beginning at 2 p.m. at Medical Lake.

Kettle Falls, the regular-season league champion, had its first 11 batters score in the first inning on its way to a 20-8 win over Freeman in one semifinal. Freeman had earned a 12-7 come-from-behind win over Colfax in a loser-out game.

Newport advanced to the title game with a 4-3, eight-inning victory over Deer Park, after pounding Medical Lake 11-0 in a morning loser-out game.

In the Panorama League tournament at Kettle Falls, Springdale earned the No. 1 seed to district with an 8-5 win over Inchelium. The Hornets are the No. 2 seed.

The third seed goes to Northwest Christian, which beat Northport 13-9. Northport is the fourth seed to districts.

Republic got the district’s fifth seed with an 11-3 win over Curlew.

Tennis

Medical Lake’s Josh Greene defeated Lakeside’s Nick Som 6-1, 6-1, in the championship of the Northeast A League boys tournament.

In boys doubles, Medical Lake’s Josh Mastel and Josh Johnson combined to defeat Freeman team of Shawn Padden and Ryan Hemmingway, 7-5, 6-1.
