Cheryl Andrizzi University Year: Sophomore Sport: Softball Position: Pitcher
Judy Andrizzi gave her softball-pitching daughter Cheryl a gift for helping University to the state playoffs at Tacoma this weekend.
After the Titans’ three victories at regionals on Friday and Saturday, Judy gave Cheryl a vacuum cleaner and a rake on Sunday and made her daughter clean her room and pull weeds for most of the day.
“She was just on cloud nine after the weekend,” Judy Andrizzi said. “I thought, ‘I’ll have her pull weeds and just make sure I knock her down to size just to make sure she doesn’t get a big head.”’
Cheryl had shown no signs of getting big-headed, but mom just wanted to make sure.
Andrizzi replaced Jamie Fox as the Titans’ starting pitcher two weeks ago after Fox suffered a season-ending injury. Andrizzi, a 16-year-old sophomore, has gone 5-1 to help U-Hi to its first fastpitch state playoff berth.
Her performance hasn’t come without some nervousness, though.
“I was really nervous replacing Jamie,” Andrizzi said. “I felt like if I didn’t do what Jamie did, then I’d be disappointing the team. But everybody has just been behind me and that really helped take away the nervousness.”
In Tacoma this week, Andrizzi said the Titans want to, “go over there and make a good name for ourselves.” , DataTimes ILLUSTRATION: Photo
