Janet Skaife Resigns Post As Ferris Basketball Coach Wants More Time With Husband; She’ll Remain Teacher At School

Janet Skaife, who coached Ferris High School to its most successful girls basketball season, announced her resignation Tuesday.

Skaife, whose five-year record was 64-55, will continue to teach English and physical education at Ferris.

“Some of the things that I hope occur in the future and some of the things that have recently occurred helped make that decision for me,” Skaife said. “I’m not sure if I feel right about it, but it’s something I needed to do.”

Last summer, she married Jerry Skaife, who helped her coach Ferris to a 24-6 record and third-place finish at the State AAA tournament in March. Jerry suffered a heart attack on April 30.

“I definitely want to spend more time with Jerry,” she said. “With me coaching in the fall and winter and Jerry coaching (CC Spokane softball) in the spring, it doesn’t leave a lot of time for a stress-free relationship.”
