Lakeland Selects Derrick As Boys Basketball Coach Bayley’s Replacement Comes Highly Regarded From Lewiston
Trent Derrick has been named head boys basketball coach at Lakeland High School, a school official announced Wednesday.
Derrick replaces Mike Bayley, who resigned after two struggling seasons.
Derrick has served as a volunteer varsity assistant the past three years at Lewiston High School while completing his teaching certification at Lewis-Clark State College.
He served previously as head coach for four years at Damascus Christian, a private high school in Boring, Ore. His final team finished sixth at state.
“He comes with glowing recommendations as a teacher and a coach,” Lakeland principal Chuck Kinsey said. “He’s been around a quality coach at Lewiston (Dick Richel).”
“If he hadn’t taken the Lakeland job, he was probably going to be my sophomore coach,” Richel said. “He’s a quality coach, very committed and very driven. He’s going to do a tremendous job at Lakeland. He will spend time building an off-season program.”
Derrick was one of four interviewed from a pool of 40 applicants.
Derrick’s hiring is subject to final board approval in June.
